Q: Can children 11 years and older stay home alone at night? — Brooke, Seattle
A: Leaving a kid home at 11 [years old] really depends on the maturity of the kid, how knowledgable that kid is and what he knows about what to do if an emergency happens. A mature 11-year-old who knows his parents' phone numbers, knows how to call 911, has been through a babysitting class, or something equivalent to that — the officers aren't going to give them a hard time. On the other hand, if the child does not know any of that, then you're going to have a problem. It really depends on the kid's maturity level, because you're right on the cusp at that age. — Detective Ed Troyer, Pierce County Sheriff's Department
