SEATTLE—
Just because everyone else is slowing down on the highway, doesn't mean we should have to, as long as we're driving the speed limit, right?Turns out, not so much.
Washington's Most Wanted's Myrle Carner spoke with Sergeant Robert Goetz with the Everett Police Department about what viewers need to know.
Sgt. Goetz says, "Whether you are in the city where the speed limit is typically 25, on a county road where a speed limit is typically 50, or on the freeway where the speed limit is 60 miles per hour, there are some of the conditions or concerns you need to be aware of when you are out there driving."
One of the big problems is our Northwest weather. When it rains, snows, or get ice, driving the speed limit won't cut it.
"If you get into a crash and you're traveling at a speed that's unsafe," says Sgt. Goetz, "you're probably going to get a ticket for speeding to fast for conditions, that's a $124 fine."
Another thing that comes up a lot for police is driving in the carpool lane while other traffic is congested.
"If you're in a carpool lane, and its clear, you can just travel 60 miles per hour because that's the speed limit," says Sgt. Goetz, "well if traffic's backed up, it's unsafe to do that, so you could be pulled over and you could receive a ticket for too fast for conditions."
